After spending most of the last three days working on the film Pennies a Day, I feel confident that you all are more than capable of explaining the story of Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank. So for this post I'm not looking for an explanation of microcredit, or for an explanation of the film. We've all seen it a few times – we know the story. What I am looking for is your opinions, thoughts, and ideas.
As I mentioned in class, not all comments on Grameen and microcredit have been positive. Some people have been critical of these kinds of programs. On complaint is that when families receive these small loans they become dependent on them. This means that families have to continue borrowing money to stay out of poverty. This is a different view from the one we saw in the film. Pennies a Day paints an extremely positive picture of Grameen and microcredit.
I don't expect you to be experts on this topic, but you have seen enough to form your own opinion. This doesn't mean that later, after learning more, you opinion won't change. But what do you think now? Do you think that microcredit is a good program? Can you think of other ideas that might work to help solve the problem of poverty in some of the countries we learned about? What about in wealthier countries like ours – can microcredit work here, and is it needed in countries like the United States?

I think microcredit is a good program because it lets people in poverty get a little money and buy all the stuff they need for their buisnesses.But,I think they shouldn't have to pay back the money.When they go to the meeting where they give out the money,they should have money ready for them to have because people in poverty might struggle to give back all of the money they borrowed .I think that we could help stop poverty by,sending nothing but a few dollars each over there every month.With all of us sending about 5 or 10 dollars over there every month could be more than a 100 dollars a month.Or we can send canned goods over there to feed them because I'm sure everyone has cans in their cabinets that they do not use anymore or have cans with food that they throw away.I think microcredit shouldn't be used in the U.S because we are a whealthy country.Also because we have shelters around here who actually give them food and a roof to sleep under.We should save the money and stuff for people who are only in poverty.Grameen bank is a pretty good thing that happended in people in povertys lives.Pennies a day was a good short clip because it showed you how everything worked in Bangledash.I think that clip should be shown to the whole school and we should start a funraiser for the people in poverty.

I agree with mariah microcredit is a good system.Im sure a lot of people there like this system because some are to poor to even feed their family.If they didn't have the system anymore than people would have probly nothing unless they are rich but even then they dont have that much money.If I was living poor and didn't have even a home or shelter to stay under I would be so happy for someone to lend me money and start a buisness.Every poor country should have microcredit.That way it would help them out a little bit and make some money.I also agree with mariah on the Pennies a day video it really showed me how people in Bangladesh lived and how they earned their money.I think the plan with the cell phones was also a good idea.Bangladesh has a nice program to follow.If they keep on doing microcredits maby more people will get more whealthy and have a better life.

Ok I geuss its my turn now I absolutley agree with Mariah microcredit is a great program and you had some great ideas Pennies a Day was a great clip it showed a lot in just 10 or 15 minutes I think that microcredit is a good program because it really helps people in poverty so they can start their own business but Mariah I disagree with your idea of them not having to pay the loans back because Grameen could go out of business and when they have there own business they'll have more money more money to pay back the loans but as I said before you have really great ideas and there should definately be a fundraiser for this you know, one day Bangladesh could be extremely important to the U.S not saying it isn't now but, you get the idea I also agree with you on the fact that Grameen should not be in the U.S. because we're so wealthy and I think there's a reason why people here are homeless but Bangladesh is and extremely poor country so to wrap it all up I agree with mariah and cailin for the most part see you in class!!!

I think microcredit is a good thing because its helping people that have nothing to get something in life and be able to start there own buisness to get money and food and a roof over there head.
They might struggle with some things over there but when it all comes down they might have somethings that are better than us come on you never know.
Life for them is not easy I am saying like some kids will never learn to read and write most parents can't afford it.
But I know when they get to the meeting in the town every week I think that they should have to pay a couple dollors at a time so there not that poor becuase they have to walk or get someone that has something to get you to the market to sell there items.
But the good thing is that they can get a better life with the money they make just from that small amount of money.
So yeah i agree with mariah about the food and money. :)
I have things that I would like to share on what I know.
I think that the U.S takes granted on some things like the money but we need to relize that bangledesh and some countrys like that dont have alot of money and that we have alot and that we need to watch what we say about us being poor. Becuase everyones parents can feed them it might be hard at times but think for people over there they dont always get to eat I bet millions die from not eating over there.

Well I think that Microcredit is an oppertunity for people in poverty to atleast get some money and buy what they need for more money and for more food I agree with Miriah because if they get money and they have to pay it back then what will be the point of microcredit. If we help stop poverty people of Bangladeshwill actually have a chance to enjoy their life have a home experiance what some rich lazy people experiance like having a very good supply of food and having good transportation getting to have your own cellphone you know that kind of stuff I think that some Americans should pitch in and help people who actually need things not just an Ipod or an Xbox 360 but shelter water and food the three major things well thats my oppinion on microcredit

i think that microcredit is good because if we did not have microcredit pepole would die of sufercation and hunger but because of microcredit pepole can get small loans and they can start there own business and can have stable lives and dont have to go through tragedy all of their lives and can live some what decent and its better than how they use to live and they havemore than a dollar a day they have atlest 5 to ten dollars a day and can have balanced meals and can sell their own stuff for their own price. I agree with everyone who agreed with Mariah. Microcredit is a very good solution.Mr. Veliz did a good job on letting us watch the video on Bangladesh. I think microcredit is a good thing because it helps people in poverty buy all of the things they need to stay alive. It gives enough money for families to feed their family, have a shelter, and water. I agree with Mariah when she said that we should send money over to countries in poverty, like Bangladesh, so that they can get out of poverty. This way they won't have to struggle to stay alive anymore. I really think that we should help countries in poverty because like Rainey said, the US takes their money for grant. I wouldn't like being poor, and having to wonder every day, how i will get food that day. Or were I will sleep tonight. Its just not fair for them.

"Pennies a Day" was a good clip that tought us alot in just 20ish minutes. I feel really bad for the families living in Bangladesh. They struggle every day, hundreds die every year. Also i agree with Caylin when she said that microcredit can make people over there wealthy. Every last bit of money they make, savages them. Everything counts. If we send 100ish dollars over there every month...they could become the most happiest people in the world.
Think about it...we can change their lives in just a push of a button. The choice is ours :)

I have a debate for you guys: why is it that the U.S is such a wealthy country and why are we considered the most powerful country in the world? there are plenty of other countries with many many more neuclear weapons than us and the united states is what 200 250 years old look at the other countries that have been around for thousands of years why is it that we are so special why are we so wealthy and developed tell me!!!!!!!

In 7th grade, we just finished a lesson on economic freedom. Things like people being able to make decisions about what they want to do with their money, instead of the government making these decisions. The countries with the most economic freedom always end up near the top of the list of most successful nations. It is important to remember - as Brittany points out - that the U.S. is very young and its success in the future is not guaranteed. Our future will depend on highly educated citizens (hint,hint) making great decisions.

I don't think microcredit is a good idea unless the borrower proves that they have a good idea and the ability to make that idea happen if they get the money.
It is a proven fact that giving money to someone has much less value to the idividule than if they actually earn it.By paying the loan back they are earning it,and it frees up money to lend to someone else.
I think we are more wealthier because we don't spend so many millions as the other people do.

I think Muhamed is doing the right thing by opening the bank because most villages in Bangladesh were already living in poverty and the cyclone that recently came thru didn't help. The bank now can provide more loans to people who are in need by giving them money to start over with.
I think microcredit is a good program but I don't think it would be so good in the United States because we are not a poor country. But for the countries that aren't as fortunate, they need all the help that they can get to get out and stay out of poverty.
I think "Microcredit" is the name given to extremely small loans made to poor borrowers. A typical microcredit scheme involves the extension of an unsecured, commercial-type loan at interest to a poverty stricken borrower. The definition of poverty stricken varies with the situation, but in Bangladesh the typical definition is a borrower who owns less than 0.5 acres of land and relies on wages for all income. Loans are disbursed in a group setting to poor borrowers, with some amount of non-credit assistance also being made available. The non-credit assistance typically ranges from skills training to marketing assistance to lesson in social empowerment.
Most micorcredit programs are set up in the following way. Credit services are targeted to landless or assetless borrowers, the moderately to extremely poor. Borrowers are placed into groups of 10-20 people which meet regularly with the loan officer of the microcredit program. These groups of borrowers substitute for collateral and take over the role of securing the loans dispersed. Each borrower ina group agrees to be held liable for all debts incurred by any member of the group. In the event that a borrower defaults, the other members of the group are required to make up the amount in default. Borrowers are encouraged or even required to moniter the behavior of one another to make sure that no one is danger of default. This process has led to extremely low rates of default, especially for first time borrowers. Repayment rates are usually above 95 percent.
Extremely small business ventures, such as those financed with microcredit loans, are known as microenterprises. Microenterprise clusters are simply groups of microenterprises located in close proximity to one another and engaging in similar business activities. The benifits of clustering will be outlined in a later section of this essay. Clustering can either arise spontaneously, or as a result of outside encouragement from gvernment or NGO's>
