Established in 1976, Black History Month is recognized in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, among other nations. It is intended to celebrate the contributions blacks in the societies in which they live. In our case, it is the role that African-Americans have played – and continue to play – in American history and life.
There are always the obvious famous African-Americans to focus on during this time: Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, and others. I have chosen to focus this year on the contributions of baseball legend Jackie Robinson. I hope you enjoyed the film that we watched in class, and I hope it made you think beyond the “obvious” African-Americans that we usually focus on during celebrations like this.
Use your comments here to express your ideas about the importance of Black History Month. Is it necessary to have a month dedicated to the contributions of black Americans? What about other months like this – Hispanic Heritage Month, Women’s History Month, and other such celebrations? Who are some of the African-Americans that you think best represent the meaning of this month?
I want to hear what you think and feel. If you disagree with what someone writes, you should comment on it but you MUST remain respectful. I will not tolerate any personal attacks, rude, or inappropriate comments. Most importantly – HAVE FUN!!

Hola People! Of course Black History Month is necessary! I mean it's celebrating the fairness of our nation. The U.S. accepts races of all kind. Look at Rosa Parks she made it possible for everyone to sit wherever they want on a bus. Jackie Robinson, he made it possible for anyone to playt any sport. Last but not least MLK! He was the one who brought our nation together to ban the ridiculous rules about desegragation! Of course there are many many more but I feel these three are the ones who shaped our nation today. I'm glad theres Hispanic Heratige Month, Black History Month, and Women's World Health Month! It's a time where we come together to celebrate those who made a diference! Those who stood out from the crowd. Sure, prejudice still exists today but those people are stuck in the past and they need to move on! That's the way I feel about the months celebrating something special.
Hi class!
Black History Month, what do I think? Well for starters let's think about all the great people who led us to freedom not talking slavery but we could talk about that. Well do you remember MLK? Of course you remember or you better remember! MLK is the one who was talking about every single day about judging on the color of your skin well that is totally wrong we all know that well today it still happens. Some people just didn't agree with MLK. Well I do. Now another great person we all remember is Rosa Parks. Like Brittany said in her paragraph. Rosa Parks was getting on a bus, and was so tired. So after they headed for the next stop a white person got on the bus and it was the law for black people to sit in the back and the white people to sit in the front. Well the bus driver ordered Parks to the back she refused to move. She was too tired to move. Well the bus driver had called back-up to remove her from the bus and she got arrested. Like Brittany said in her paragraph again Parks made it possible for anyone to sit anywhere on the bus! Now some of those great African Americans who made a difference in life became remembered by celebrating dates that they have succeeded their dream to change rules. Well we are so lucky to have so many wonderful people who has made a great change in peoples lives. Black History Month isn't just a month it is a month that is very special to represent all those great African Americans who made America a great country and not only in America in many other countries also. Well that is what I think of Black History Month!
F period rox!!!!
